Cara's story

Life changed completely after mum’s diagnosis.

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025. She was scared to tell me at the time, and now I understand why. Life before cancer and life after are completely different. It’s never the same again.

I tried getting her out of the house and organising fun things to keep her mind busy, but she wasn’t smiling like she usually did. She wasn’t my usual happy, bubbly mum.

Mum used lots of the Breast Cancer Now services for support during her treatment.

She went through 2 operations followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. And she’s now on tablets for the next 10 years, then hopefully she will be cancer-free.

I hosted a Wear It Pink event to spread awareness and make everyone aware of the signs and symptoms. I did a little bake sale at the nursery where I work, with help from both the children and staff. Lots of parents came in support, and bought lots of delicious cakes.

I want people to be aware of how breast cancer can change not just the person affected, but the family, too.

Parents asked me lots of questions about why I was wearing it pink. I explained it was for my mum. Lots of people don’t realise the impact breast cancer has when it hasn’t happened to them. But when it does, it changes your life forever.

It’s never the same after someone has cancer, and to see my mum go through that was heartbreaking. It’s important that people Wear It Pink in October, so they can raise awareness about its impact.

My advice for others is to be yourself and have fun with it!

My advice for those taking part is just be yourself! And run your event how you think best. Wear It Pink day usually falls on a Friday, but I held my event on Thursday – our busiest day of the week at the nursery.

Get all your friends and family involved and make it a good one to remember!
