A woman on her phone in her back garden

Someone Like Me

You never have to face breast cancer alone. With Someone Like Me, you can find somebody who really understands what you’re going through.

About Someone Like Me

We’ll match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. They'll be a phone call or email away to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen. Because there’s nothing like finding someone who really understands.

Whatever you're concerned about, whether it's the shock of a diagnosis, making decisions about treatment or how to adjust to life afterwards, our volunteers are there for you.

Our volunteers can support you if:

  • You have or have had primary breast cancer
  • You’re undergoing genetic testing or have a genetic diagnosis
  • You’re a partner, family member or friend of someone affected by primary breast cancer

FAQs

  • How does the phone support work?

If you’d like to talk to a volunteer by phone, you can contact us using our form below.

If you’d like to speak to us sooner, you can call us on 0800 138 6551. We’re open Monday to Thursday, from 9am to 5pm, and we’re open on Fridays from 9am to 4pm. We’ll ask you a few questions about yourself to find out the most important issues for you right now. We'll then find a volunteer with similar experiences.

  • How does the email support work?

You can look at our volunteer profiles and decide who you’d like to get in touch with. You’ll find their email addresses on the profiles so you can email them directly.

Our volunteers should respond to your email within 3-5 working days.

The volunteers on our website are only a small proportion of the volunteers who are available for you to talk to. If you can’t find a volunteer that seems right for you, we’ll do our best to help you find someone who is.

You can reach us by calling 0800 138 6551 (free of charge) 9am-5pm Monday to Thursday and 9am-4pm on Friday, or by emailing someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org.

  • Who will I be matched with?

We’ll match you to a volunteer who has gone through a similar experience. When we call you, we’ll find out what you need.

You might want to be matched with someone who’s had the same diagnosis and needed to choose their treatments or surgery.

Or you might want to speak to someone of a similar age, with similar personal circumstances who understands how you may be feeling.

  • What support will I receive?

Our volunteers can support you at any point. You might have recently had a diagnosis, be mid-way through treatment, or you might be trying to regain a sense of normality when treatments have ended.

    Your volunteer will:

    • Listen without judgment
    • Offer emotional support and practical tips
    • Share their own experiences with you where relevant
    • Support you if you need to make informed decisions
    • Be there for you if you just need someone to talk to
  • Is the service accessible?

We’ll always do our best to make sure our service is as accessible to your needs as possible.

Many of our volunteers speak other languages and we can arrange for you to use the service through a telephone interpreter.

If you have any additional needs, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help. You can call us on 0800 138 6551 or email someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org
