UPDATE: Supporting women to reduce alcohol intake and breast cancer risk

Read about the progress so far on this study, the preliminary findings and outcomes, and find out how you can get involved.

Project title: Alcohol and breast cancer: Raising awareness and supporting women to reduce alcohol consumption

What’s the study about?

Drinking alcohol is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, but many people are not aware of this link.

In June 2023, we shared a research study which aims to increase knowledge about alcohol use and the risk of breast cancer. And to support women who wish to reduce their drinking.

The researchers asked:

  • How can we raise awareness of the link between alcohol and breast cancer?
  • How can we support women who are thinking about reducing their alcohol consumption?

How did Voices get involved?

Voices have gotten involved in this study in different ways.

In March, we invited Voices to join the advisory panel for this study. The panel is running throughout the research and guiding how it’s designed, implemented, and how the findings are interpreted.

Some of our Voices also took part in a survey and in focus groups where they shared their views about how the researchers should design an awareness campaign about alcohol and breast cancer.

Finally, some of you took part in a workshop which helped to design an awareness campaign around alcohol and breast cancer.

What are the findings so far?

The researchers have identified 3 groups of people and the types of messaging they like:

  • Hard hitters – these people like shock messaging and graphics
  • Storytellers – these people connect more with people’s personal experiences
  • Doubters – these people are sceptical about the link between alcohol and breast cancer.

There are also 3 main strategies used by women who’d like to drink less:

  • Substituting alcohol products for no-alcohol products.
  • Setting goals and celebrating successes.
  • Thinking about personal strengths and values that do not include alcohol consumption.

How can I get involved?

You can still get involved in this study. The researchers would like to hear your feedback on the findings and the resources that they’ve produced.

You can give your feedback by filling out an online survey.

This will help them understand how impactful what they’ve done is so far, and how their research can be further developed.
