Younger women’s experiences of breast cancer and occupation

Categories: Younger Women, Occupation

Help shape the design of a research study exploring young women’s experiences of breast cancer and occupation (everyday activity).

What’s the project?

Anne Marie Langan, Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy at London Southbank University, is seeking 5 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer under the age of 50, to join a Research Reference Group to support a PhD research study.

The title of her research is ‘Breast cancer and occupation: an exploration of the lived experience’ and the aims are:
• To explore how occupation (everyday activity) is experienced by young women living with and beyond primary breast cancer
• To understand the meaning of occupation as lived by young women with primary breast cancer with an emphasis on post-treatment experience.

Why do you want me to be involved?

By collaborating with and involving young women who have experience of breast cancer in the research design, the aim is to identify avoidable barriers to participation and thereby improve the quality and the relevance of the research.

What will you ask me to do?

The reference group will meet twice year (virtually) for the duration of the study (3 years) to assist in shaping the research. Participation will involve:

  • Discussion of the aims of the research and the methods for data collection
  • Review of Participant Information Sheets and Consent Forms
  • Making suggestions for appropriate methods and avenues for recruitment of participants
  • Making suggestions for appropriate ways to disseminating the research findings

If you are interested in joining the Research Reference Group, please contact the researcher (details below) and confirm how you meet the criteria and why you are interested in being involved.

Who can take part?

Women based in the UK diagnosed with primary breast cancer under the age of 50 years are eligible to take part. I am seeking women from across the age range under 50, from a diversity of geographic locations and ethnic groups.
