Understanding how language affects how people feel about recurrence

Categories: Patient & Carer

What’s the project about?

People living beyond primary breast cancer, and other types of cancer, often find the possibility of recurrence difficult.

Researchers at the Royal Marsden are planning research which will look at whether the language the healthcare professionals use when talking about recurrence can impact how people feel about it.

They’d like to know whether there were certain terms or language used by any health care staff that may have impacted your feelings in terms of cancer recurrence, positively or negatively.

The want to hear about your experiences to help shape the research questions later in the project.

Who can take part?

Anyone who’s been affected by cancer can participate - either through a personal diagnosis, or as a friend, family member or carer of someone with a diagnosis.

Why do you want me to be involved?

By sharing your experiences, you can ensure that the researchers are asking the right questions in the later stages of the project, and that the outcomes will lead to positive changes for people living beyond breast cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

The researchers would like to understand how you’ve found receiving information about recurrence. They’d also like to hear whether there’s anything you think could be improved in how healthcare professionals share information about it.

You can contribute directly on the website, or you can email the project lead with your thoughts on Nancy.Adjei@rmh.nhs.uk.
