Girl showing help in sign language

Looking for British sign language volunteers!

Categories: BSL fluent, Someone Like Me

Our Someone Like Me service would like to recruit new volunteers who have been personally affected by breast cancer, and can use British Sign Language.

What’s the project?

We’re working to make our support services more accessible to everyone who is affected by breast cancer.

Our Someone Like Me service helps make sure no one has to face breast cancer alone, by matching people with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience. Currently, we can offer this service by email or telephone and in various languages, but we’d like to be able to offer BSL fluent volunteers to match with people with hearing loss.

We’d also be interested in hearing from anyone who is open to supporting us with translation and interpretation.

Why do you want me to be involved?

Our aim is that no one faces breast cancer alone – it’s therefore vital that people can access support in their own language and connect with people with similar experiences to them.

Your specific experiences can help us tailor support and ensure it’s accessible to more people.

What will you ask me to do?

You can find out more about the role of a Someone Like Me volunteer on our website. You can contact the team at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org or on 0114 23 6490 to find out more and to discuss translation or interpretation opportunities.

Who can take part?

You must be able to use BSL to a level 6 standard or as your first language.

To become a Someone Like Me volunteer you also need to have experience of primary breast cancer, genetic diagnosis or be a friend/family member. If you are interested in helping with translations or interpretation, then you do not need a personal experience.
