Informing regulations for advanced practice roles in healthcare

Categories: Personal Diagnosis

Join an online public advisory group to help the NMC develop additional regulations for nurses and midwives in advanced practice roles.

What’s the project about?

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the independent regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK, and nursing associates in England.

More experienced nurses and midwives across the UK are taking on complex, expert roles known as advanced practice. Nurses and midwives taking on these roles has huge benefits for the people in their care.

Their advanced knowledge and skill enable them to communicate well with patients and make timely person-centred decisions. They have the freedom and authority to act in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the people they care for.

The NMC is reviewing how they might regulate this type of role in the future, and they'd love to hear from you. They’re inviting people who’ve received care from nurses in advanced practice roles to join a patient advisory board.

Who can take part?

You can join the advisory board if you have a health condition (such as breast cancer) which means that you’ve received care from a nurse in an advanced practice role.

You don’t have to have any existing knowledge or experience of being part of an advisory group - the desire to share your experiences and views is all that’s needed.

Why do you want me to be involved?

By joining the advisory group and by sharing your views and experiences, you can help the the NMC shape their approach.

The additional regulations can ensure that people in advanced practice roles can deliver care that’s safe, effective and kind and that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing.

What will you ask me to do?

The group will be made up of people with lived experience of advanced practice care.

As a group member, you’ll join online meetings with other members. You’ll have the chance to discuss you different experiences of this kind of care and hep the NMC shape and develop their new regulations.

Meetings will take place online every six or so weeks between September 2023 and January 2024 (online).

The first meeting is on Monday 25 September 2023 from 1pm to 3pm. However, you don’t have to be at the first meeting to join later ones.

The NMC also have an involvement payment policy in place to recognise your contribution.
