Exploring how we use AI at Breast Cancer Now

Categories: Patient or Loved One

Join an online workshop exploring how we use artificial intelligence to support our work as an organisation, and share your views on how we should be using it.

What’s the project about?

You might have seen news and adverts about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it’s being used for things like:

  • Analysing large amounts of data
  • Generating fake images
  • Replacing customer services teams with chatbots
  • And more

Some people are very excited about the opportunities it offers and others are worried about the risks of harm. Breast Cancer Now’s AI Fundamentals project is exploring if or how AI should or could be used at Breast Cancer Now. We want to involve people with experience of breast cancer to ensure a range of views and perspectives are considered.

Who can take part?

The workshop is open to anyone who's been affected by breast cancer in any way, and who's interested in finding out more about AI, or its uses. You don't have to have any experience in using it.

Why do you want me to be involved?

AI could have a useful impact at Breast Cancer Now. For example, to further research, to make it easier for people to find the information they need, or to improve ‘back office’ processes.

You'll be informing Breast Cancer Now's AI strategy and AI governance framework as we explore this new technology, its possible uses, and its cultural and societal implications. All to help us do more for people affected by breast cancer.

What will you ask me to do?

We’re inviting you to a two-hour online workshop with others who have lived experience. The workshop will be facilitated by an outside facilitator from Torchbox called Edd Baldry.

We’ve got two options for the workshop:

  • Thursday 22 August 10am-12pm

  • Tuesday 27 August 5-7pm

We’ll go with the date that has the most interest, so do let us know if you’re available on either date.

We'll ask for your ideas and views on the opportunities, risks and guidelines for how AI could be used at Breast Cancer Now to improve our impact or efficiency.

We’ll be using an interactive whiteboard (called Miro) which you can add your thoughts directly into. Don’t worry if you’re not familiar with it, we’ll explain exactly how to contribute and our team will be on hand to help if you have any tech issues.

We recommend you join on a laptop or computer, rather than on a phone to enable you to fully take part.
