Comparing a new imaging technology with current standard treatment

Help shape the design of a study comparing imaging technologies, which could inform breast cancer treatment planning and speed up time to treatment.

What’s the title of the study?

CONTRAST: Comparison Of coNTrast enhanced MRI And Spectral mammography Treatment planning

What’s the study about?

Researchers are designing a study to compare contrast enhanced standard mammography (CESM) imaging with contrast enhanced MRI, which is currently used to inform breast cancer treatment planning.

If the results suggest CESM is a safe and effective alternative to CE-MRI, this could speed up time to treatment.

Breast Cancer Now, together with a group of Voices, contributed to earlier work for NICE (MIB304 Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography for breast cancer, now publicly available from NICE’s website). This project highlighted an evidence gap (lack of direct comparison of CESM with CE-MRI), which this study aims to address.

The researchers want your thoughts on whether the information documents for paraticipants clearly explain the study and what it involves. They would also like your feedback on a short survey that participants will complete at the end of the study and on how they’ve described the study in their draft submission to the research ethics committee.

Who can take part?

Anyone who is interested can take part. And, people who’ve helped with this project before are especially invited to join.

Why do you want me to be involved?

Voices’ involvement in this project so far has been extremely helpful, to the point that it’s changed the development process going forward. It’s strengthened the case to include experts by experience in exactly the same way as clinical experts.

And, your feedback will contribute to the success of this study. Results from the study will be written up and submitted for publication in academic journals, and this evidence will inform the development of future guidance, improving care for people affected by breast cancer in the future.

What will you ask me to do?

The researchers would like to get your feedback on:

  • The lay summary of the study (for the funding application)
  • The flowchart of study design
  • The patient information sheet
  • The patient experience survey (This will go out to everyone who takes part in the study)

There are specific questions about each document in the patient group invitation.

You don’t have to answer on all of these, just as many as you can.
