Using tattoos to camouflage or decorate scars

A project hoping to better understand how people use tattoos as a form of scar camouflage and decoration.

What's the title of the study?

Exploring the use of decorative tattooing to camouflage or decorate scars

What's the study about?

Many people live with the visible effects of surgical scarring as a result of treatment for a health condition such as cancer. This can affect your mental well-being. And evidence suggests that people can use decorative tattoos camouflage or celebrate the scar to improve psychosocial well-being.

This research project would like to better understand how decorative tattoos can be used in this way. The researchers also want to know some of the motivations and experiences behind these tattoos from the view of someone who is living with scars.

Who's organising it?

Name of individuals: Kieran Moulton

What are the criteria for taking part?

To take part you must be over 18 and be based in the UK.
You must have used tattoos to decorate or camouflage a scar – the tattoo does not need to have been completed.

What do I need to do?

You’ll need to attend a one-hour interview in person, by phone or virtually, to talk about your motivations and experience of using tattoos to decorate or camouflage a scar.
