Understanding the science of radiotherapy

Share your views in the development of accurate and rigorously researched resources to help cancer patients understand the basic science behind radiotherapy treatment, aimed at avoiding misinformation and reducing anxiety during treatment.

What’s the project?

The initial aim of this project is to gain as much insight into patients' radiotherapy experience as possible, along with their thoughts and opinions on learning more about the science of radiotherapy treatment. This will help to inform development of educational resources focused on patients’ needs and preferences.

In the long term, these resources will be made available to patients before, during and after their treatment in order to help them understand how and why the treatment they are undergoing is successful. Patients will be able to access this information across a range of media according to their preferences, and the information will be tailored across a range of educational levels.

A very long-term goal will see these educational and scientific resources being expanded to include other aspects of cancer treatment including imaging, diagnosis and chemotherapy.

Why do you want me to be involved?

I would like you to be involved because I want to know how you would like to learn about the science of radiotherapy treatment. Everyone has a different way of best taking in information, and I want to make sure that this information is accessible to as many people as possible.

I also want to know what you would like to find out – what other aspects of cancer treatment are of interest, why do you want to learn about the science of cancer treatment.

All of this information will help to produce the best possible resources for cancer patients and their loved ones to understand the treatment that they are going through.

What will you ask me to do?

You will be asked to fill in a short survey. This covers your education level (including science), your own experience of radiotherapy and if and how you looked for information on radiotherapy before, during or after your treatment. It also asks how, what and why you would like to learn about the science of radiotherapy.

All questions are entirely optional, and your responses are anonymous.

Who can take part?

You are eligible to take part in this project if you or a loved one has undergone, will undergo or is currently undergoing, radiotherapy as part of cancer treatment. This can include any type of radiotherapy for any cancer.

How do I get involved?
