Take part in an interview to help researchers better understand men’s experiences and decision-making during breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
What’s the project about?
There are around 400 men diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK, compared to around 55,500 women. This means less than 1% of breast cancer cases in the UK are in men and this is therefore significantly understudied.
This project is looking at men’s experiences and decision-making during breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as the support they were given throughout.
To do this, researchers want to interview 5-10 men who have had breast cancer (invasive or non-invasive) within the last 5 years.
The overall aim is to improve the care that men with breast cancer receive.
Who can take part?
You can take part if you:
- Are a man over 18 years old
- Speak English
- Have been diagnosed with primary breast cancer in the last 5 years.
If your breast cancer has come back, or you have secondary breast cancer, you unfortunately can’t take part.
Why do you want me to be involved?
The overall aim of this project is to improve the care that men receive in this area of oncology in the future.
What will you ask me to do?
First, you’ll be asked to complete a demographic questionnaire.
Then, to further understand your decision-making and experiences during breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, you’ll have an interview with the researchers. They’ll also ask about the support you received and if any improvements could be made to better your care.
You can choose whether to have your interview face-to-face - either at Birkbeck College, or somewhere that works for you, or virtually via telephone or video call.
The interviews will also be audio-recorded.
