Exploring weight management programmes in breast cancer care

Categories: Personal diagnosis, Women

Help researchers understand how to support women with breast cancer to manage their weight and find better ways to involve everyone in research.

What’s the title of the study?

The name of the project is FOR ALL.

What’s the project about?

Weight management is an important factor in cancer treatment, recovery, and overall health, so it’s important that support is available for everyone.

Researchers at Leeds University want to understand people’s experiences of managing their weight after a diagnosis of breast cancer.

They’re particularly interested in getting views from those living in communities and backgrounds that are often not included in cancer research.

At the moment, they’re focusing on the following 3 groups:

  • Women who are living on a low income, finding it difficult to make ends meet or receiving financial support
  • Women from South Asian communities
  • Women from Black African or Black Caribbean communities

The researchers will speak with women with personal experience of breast cancer, as well as health professionals and community organisations, to gather insights.

Ultimately, the researchers are looking to develop healthy living and weight management support that women diagnosed with breast cancer from different backgrounds and cultures find helpful.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Amy Creaser

Job title: Senior Research Fellow

Organisation: University of Leeds

Email address: A.V.Creaser@leeds.ac.uk

Phone number: 0113 343 7631

Who can take part?

You can take part in this research if you:

  • Are over 18 years old
  • Are a woman who’s experienced a diagnosis of breast cancer in the last 5 years, and completed main treatment at least 3 months ago
  • Have experience or interest in managing your weight
  • Are based in the UK (and have a UK phone number)

And if you are from one of the following 3 groups:

  • Women living on a low income, finding it difficult to make ends meet or receiving financial support
  • Women from South Asian communities
  • Women from Black African or Black Caribbean communities

Why do you want me to be involved?

The information gathered through these interviews will help the researchers better understand the experiences and views of women living with and beyond breast cancer.

Collecting this information could have an important impact on future care and research in breast cancer and weight management.

What will you ask me to do?

If you choose to take part in this project, you’ll be asked to take part in an interview with a researcher.

This can be on the phone, on a video call (e.g. on Microsoft Teams or Zoom) or face-to-face at a place and time convenient for you.

As an optional extra, you can also choose to attend some group meetings that will bring together and discuss the ideas and views that have been suggested during the overall project.

These group meetings would be at a later date. The researchers expect there to be 3-6 meetings, each lasting around 2 hours. Please note, you can take part in the individual interview and decide not to take part in this extra part.

If you do choose to take part in the extra group meetings, you’ll get a £50 shopping voucher (only sent to a UK postal home address) for your time at each of the optional extra group meetings.

How do I get involved?

You can find more information by contacting Amy Creaser, the lead researcher of this project, by emailing her at A.V.Creaser@leeds.ac.uk, or by calling 0113 343 7631.

When’s the deadline?

There's currently no fixed deadline for this project.
