Body image and breast cancer

Personal Diagnoses | 18 to 39 years

Help researchers understand the level of body image concerns among young adults who have or have had cancer and inform development of new resources to help this group.

What’s the title of the study?

Understanding the level of body image concerns present among young adults (18-39 years) who have or have had cancer

What’s the project about?

Many people have body image concerns following treatment for breast cancer.

In this project, the researchers want to increase understanding of body image concerns in young adults (people aged 18-39). They also aim to learn more about the strategies they’ve used to improve their body image and hear their views on things they haven’t yet tried.

Using this information, the researchers will then aim to develop helpful resources tailored specifically for this group.

Who’s organising it?

Name of project lead: Sairah Bi

Job title: PhD student

Organisation: University of Surrey

Email address: sb01908@surrey.ac.uk

Phone number: 07587 505 077

Who can take part?

You can take part if you:

  • Are aged 18-39
  • Have ever been diagnosed with breast cancer

Why do you want me to be involved?

By participating in this study, you’ll be helping to improve understanding of body image concerns in young adults living with cancer.

And you’ll help uncover which strategies prove to be most helpful in reducing body image concerns.

This study aims to provide resources that will help young adults feel more comfortable in their body. The more people who share their views, the better understanding the researchers can gain and the more useful the resources they develop are likely to be.

What will you ask me to do?

If you choose to join the study, you will be asked to fill out an anonymous online survey that should take between 30-60 minutes to complete.

The questionnaire will include questions about you and about your current body image. It will then go on to ask about strategies you have used and how you feel about these. The questions will also ask about a range of other strategies and whether you think these would have been helpful for you.

Most of the questions will ask you to choose your responses on a scale (e.g. agree to disagree). However, there are some open questions so that you can give detailed answers if you want to.

How do I get involved?

You can fill out the survey.

You can also find more information by email Sairah at sb01908@surrey.ac.uk, or calling her on 07587 505 077.

When's the deadline?
