Black and Asian women’s experience of NHS services

Attend an interview and help researchers understand experiences of black and Asian women using NHS breast cancer services.

What’s the study about?

In England, people with breast cancer from black and Asian communities are under-represented in national cancer surveys, so we know little about their experience of breast cancer care.

When women from black and Asian communities give feedback about their breast cancer care experiences, this is often less favourable than their white counterparts.

In this project, researchers are exploring the breast cancer care experience of women from black and Asian communities, to understand what works for them and what can be improved.

Who can take part?

You can take part if you:

  • Were assigned female at birth
  • Self-identify from black African/black Caribbean or Asian ethnicity
  • Live in England
  • Speak English
  • Have received a primary diagnosis of breast cancer
  • Have used NHS breast cancer services (e.g., visiting your GP to discuss your concerns and/or diagnosis, or attending an appointment in the hospital)

Why do you want me to be involved?

By participating, you can help researchers understand what works and what can be improved to enhance breast cancer care for minority ethnic groups.

The results of this study will help to raise awareness of the unique needs and care priorities of black and Asian women living with breast cancer in England.

They will also help researchers to formulate recommendations for policymakers and clinicians, to ensure NHS breast cancer services provide equal and quality care for all patients

What will you ask me to do?

You’ll attend an online interview where you’ll share your experiences of using the NHS breast cancer services.

The interview will last approximately 30-45 minutes and will be at a time that’s convenient for you.

Your identity and information will be anonymised in the study, and all participants will be given a £25 gift voucher to thank you for your time and participation.
