Walk the Walk is the UK's largest grant-making breast cancer charity and has raised over £137 million through its power walking events. Sign up or volunteer.
We are enormously grateful to the longstanding and vital support we have received from Walk the Walk for over 20 years.
The generous funding we receive from Walk the Walk has contributed to many of the biggest achievements in breast cancer research including the creation of a national tissue bank, the development of PARP inhibitor drugs and the launch of LEGACY – our pioneering secondary breast cancer pilot study.
Walk the Walk have also funded the Walk the Walk Fellowship, conducted by Walk the Walk Fellow and Breast Cancer Now Scientist Dr Damir Vareslija at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Dr Vareslija’s research is investigating breast cancer spreading to the brain in the hope vital new treatments can be developed.
Our partnership with Walk the Walk makes such a significant difference to securing the future of our research, which in turn is changing what a breast cancer diagnosis means for women, men and their families.
How Walk the Walk started
In 1996, Nina Barough CBE, Founder and Chief Executive of Walk the Walk Worldwide, led a group of 13 women, wearing decorated bras, as they power walked the New York City Marathon raising £25,000. Nina donated this wonderful £25,000 to Breakthrough Breast Cancer, one of Breast Cancer Now’s legacy charities, beginning our incredible 20 year partnership with Walk the Walk.
2 months after the New York City Marathon, Nina was diagnosed with breast cancer. Nina continued to power walk to keep positive during her treatment and this was the starting point for Walk the Walk and the MoonWalks.
Nina and the Walk the Walk trustees are passionate about granting Walk the Walk funds to research and also to helping improve the lives of people who are living with cancer now. The grants have been used to support a diverse range of projects that all together will take us forward from a time when people fear breast cancer to a generation where everybody diagnosed with the disease survives.
