Cetti was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. After receiving help from Breast Cancer Now, she decided to host an Afternoon Tea to raise money for others like her.
Hosting an Afternoon Tea helped me regain my sparkle
Back in July 2019, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had subsequent surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Breast Cancer Now has been and continues to be a huge help to me after my diagnosis. I was especially grateful to have someone to talk to on a regular basis through the Someone Like Me service.
Last summer, I decided to host an Afternoon Tea to help others affected by breast cancer. I didn’t know it then, but hosting the event and looking after people on the day helped me regain my sparkle.
I held my tea in the garden; it was a lovely sunny day spent with family and friends. Everyone helped themselves to a range of cakes, we served tea, coffee and my lovely guests donated whilst sitting and enjoying the company of each other.
We played lots of fun games as well! A friend made an amazing garden themed cake with a ceramic gnome on the top – people could donate £1 and guess his name and the winner won the cake. I also had a tombola, played the Game of Scones sweepstake from the Afternoon Tea kit and I organised a silent auction for a Ted Baker bag.
At the end of the day I had a couple of uncut cakes left over, so I popped a message on a group chat I had created and auctioned them off to neighbours raising a few more pounds.
My biggest tip is: don’t be afraid to ask for help! It’s wonderful to have an extra pair of hands to help make the tea and wash up. My mum and daughter worked on a rota to help with that so I could enjoy time with my guests.
Everyone has been so supportive and overwhelmingly generous in helping me raise funds for a charity which has helped me, and I am incredibly grateful.
