Stella was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2014. She will be speaking at our Carols by Candlelight event in London.
Prior to my diagnosis, no one in my family had ever had breast cancer. I had always assumed it was hereditary. It was only after I got it that I realised that you could just have it randomly. I didn't know that.
My son, James, was nine, and it was a confusing and distressing time for him. He was not very good at expressing his feelings and would often resort to being naughty and difficult as a way of dealing with the situation. This made things even more difficult for me at a time when I was struggling to cope with the most basic things.
After my active treatment I found out about Breast Cancer Care. My oncologist recommended that I went on a Moving Forward course.
It was after that course that I started to really feel that I was recovering from cancer. Physically, mentally and emotionally. It's one thing to go through the physical treatment and recover from that, but actually you don't recover immediately – it takes a while to get back into yourself.
Stella will be a speaker at Carols by Candlelight in London on 17th December. Join us for an evening to remember and help us support everyone affected by breast cancer. Buy your tickets today
