Breast Cancer Now helped me when I needed it, so it is time to give a little bit back

Helen was diagnosed with primary breast cancer a few years ago, and has since recovered from treatment. Now, she is raising money for secondary breast cancer research with the £1,000 challenge.

I was fortunate enough to get treatment

Hi, I'm Helen and I live in a little town called Lenzie, which is about six miles north of Glasgow. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2018, which was a bit of a shock to the system. However, I was very fortunate that it could be treated with a lumpectomy and I am happy to say that I have now made a full recovery.

The treatment was a bit unforgiving, but now that I have recovered, I have decided to take on a challenge.

I love walking – it is something I have always enjoyed. So, I had a look online and I came across the £1,000 challenge for Breast Cancer Now.

It is not difficult to get involved in fundraising

Breast Cancer Now helped me during my recovery and rehabilitation with four weeks of interaction, and it was fantastic. So, I thought, it was time for me to give a little bit back.

I am now fit and well enough that I can get back out there and start walking, so my challenge is to walk 1000 miles from 1 January through to 31 July. I am well on the way so far, and it has been with the awesome support of some very good friends and my family who have been out with me almost the whole time.

I want to encourage others to get out there and do something for this charity, because we need to raise money for secondary breast cancer. I was fortunate enough not to be diagnosed with secondary breast cancer, but that doesn’t mean I can’t help give something back to Breast Cancer Now in the hope that one day we will find a cure.

Honestly, it is not that difficult – just get out and walk when you can. Or perhaps do something else. I know others have done things like squats or baking. So come on, we can do it together!
