This morning Breast Cancer Care was at Downing Street to deliver a petition of 12,013 signatures. It calls for the UK and devolved governments to make secondary breast cancer a priority.
We know that many people living with secondary breast cancer are not getting the support and care they need. A person with secondary breast cancer is far less likely to have a clinical nurse specialist as part of their care than someone with a primary breast cancer diagnosis.
Also as we highlighted on Secondary Breast Cancer Awareness Day a lot of people with secondary breast cancer have unnecessary pain because they are not being referred to a palliative care team.
The fact that each year approximately 12000 people die from secondary breast cancer makes our petition all the more poignant.
It is absolutely vital that governments in Westminster Edinburgh Cardiff and Belfast do more to support people living with the disease so people get the care they need a point that was echoed last week in a debate in the Wetsminster Parliament.
The phenomenal response to our petition shows just how important this is to people so thank you to everyone who signed it. We hope that the UK and devolved governments will listen to those voices and make a commitment to improving care and ensuring everyone gets the support they need.We will continue to campaign until that happens.
