Today is World Cancer Day and in 2013 the annual awareness campaign is focusing on myth-busting.
At Breast Cancer Care we know that one of the myths people with breast cancer often come up against is the expectation that as soon as their hospital treatment is over they’ll be ‘back to normal’.
One in eight women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. With more than 8 out of 10 of them surviving beyond five years there are now more than half a million people living in the UK who have been diagnosed and treated.
And for many both the physical and emotional impact can be long-lasting. This is why we provide a range of free Moving Forward information and support services for anyone living with and beyond breast cancer helping them to approach life after treatment with more confidence.
We’ve gathered some myth-busting facts about how people feel once their treatment for breast cancer is over with the help of 200 people who completed a survey for us.
The results suggest people face a lot of different issues including the ways their relationships change because of their diagnosis – showing that breast cancer can have both a positive and negative impact on relationships.
You can see the survey results in our Moving Forward gallery as well as stories shared by people who want to help raise awareness of the issues.
