Fab Four complete epic Land’s End to John o’Groats adventure

Fab Four complete epic Land’s End to John o’Groats adventure to launch FAB1 Million.

Eight hundred and seventy-four miles one pink Rolls-Royce Ghost the iconic FAB1 numberplate and a truly Fab Four: celebrity broadcasters Chris Evans Professor Brian Cox and James May and Take That band member Gary Barlow.

These were the ingredients on Thursday 18 April for a madcap adventure of epic proportions to launch the FAB1 Million campaign with a bang.

Chris's brainchild FAB1 Million aims to raise £1 million for us in a year. Supporters will be renting out the Thunderbirds-inspired FAB1 car and sending text and web donations.

At stops along Thursday's route the foursome put on a mini roadshow with Gary serenading the jubilant crowds with some Take That classics and Brian on the ivories to remind the crowd that he was once in pop band D:Ream of ‘Things Can Only Get Better’ fame.

James sprinkled some love in the form of roses while Chris kept the whole show on the road – an apt role for the BBC Radio 2 DJ. At each stop one lucky supporter won the chance to ride for a stint with the foursome in the FAB1 car.

Boosted by the crowds

Everyone at Breast Cancer Care and in the FAB1 team would like to thank all the supporters who greeted us at the stops – it meant the world to Chris Gary Brian and James and kept them going.

The the epic journey ended just after 5am at the UK’s most northerly point. Despite it still being dark dressing gown-clad supporters lined the street to give the adventurers a final boost. At 5.22am and with dawn fast approaching FAB1 passed the pink ribbon finish line. Mission accomplished!

The Fab Four did the road trip to raise awareness of the year-long FAB1 Million campaign. And although this part's complete it’s only the start of the FAB1 Million journey.

Chris Evans:

'I can't tell you how incredible the last 24 hours have been. I woke up at 4am to do my radio show in Truro and then hot-footed it to John o’Groats to do Friday’s show from Inverness. Everything in between was just magic.

'It was an absolute blast to have Gary Professor Brian and James on this adventure with me and I can safely say that the FAB1 Rolls-Royce is one of the most special cars I’ve ever driven! I can’t tell you how much it meant to have the crowds we did at every stop supporting us along the way they really did help spur us along. With the FAB1 Million campaign kicked off in style I’m now looking forward to the next 12 months where we will be pushing hard to raise £1 million for Breast Cancer Care.'

Gary Barlow:

'This has been an incredible experience. Breast Cancer Care is a very worthwhile cause and it’s easy to see that a lot of people are touched by it and support it. We have had so much support on this journey; we had people lining the roads children from schools coming out to wave and people wearing pink and giving us gifts. It’s been amazing.'

 Professor Brian Cox:

'Well we made it to the end of the longest day I’ve ever experienced it was 20 hours long but every one of them was wonderful. The number of people that turned out at every place we stopped and along the way has been remarkable. At the end I think virtually everybody that lives in John o’Groats must have turned out to meet us on a freezing cold morning at 5am. It’s been an absolute pleasure to be part of this journey. We had some fun along the way. I’ve been teaching Gary a bit of keyboards I think some of his chord structures would be better with a bit more knowledge of jazz harmony.'

James May:

'Let’s be brutally honest it wasn’t very difficult for us and it’s not going to go down in history as one of the greatest human achievements. We drove a very nice luxury car through a very nice country in excellent company. But I think we have left a big pink vapour trail of awareness behind us. The car is now quite famous which was the point so that we could raise awareness of the work of this great charity. It’s been wonderful. We can’t thank the public enough for their support we really appreciate it. Oh and by the way if you find Gary Barlow’s cooker could you hand it back.'
