Virgin Money London Marathon: meet team M&S

Every year, thousands of brave people take part in the London Marathon. Here are just a few who are running for Breast Cancer Now.

Every year, thousands of brave people take part in the London Marathon - many of them for charity. This year, a number of people from M&S have decided to run for Breast Cancer Now. Here are their stories.

Kerrie Trickett-Smith, Section Coordinator, M&S Kingstown, Carlisle

Why did you sign up to the marathon?

A colleague from work saw a Yammer post and tagged me saying “I think this is something you could do”  I was 100%... yes!

What does running for Breast Cancer Now mean to you?

I lost a dear friend through breast cancer and I know she would be proud of me doing this.

Are you a seasoned sprinter or a nervous novice?

I took up running 3 years ago and since then it has turned from a pastime into an obsession.

What will keep you motivated in the hardest of miles?

Running clears my head and I am in a world of my own, but knowing my family is waiting at the end will spur me on.

What’s your biggest marathon fear?

The only fear I have is not completing it but once I put my mind to something, I generally achieve it.

Susie Morrison, Store Manager, M&S Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow

Why did you sign up to the marathon?

I've watched the London marathon on TV for years- it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. To run for a charity like BCN makes it twice the experience.

What does running for Breast Cancer Now mean to you?

I lost my dad to the disease and have friends who have battled with breast cancer and lost their fight - the work the charity does is invaluable.

Are you a seasoned sprinter or a nervous novice?

Definitely a nervous novice - I’m in it to run, not to race.

What will keep you motivated in the hardest of miles?

I've dedicated every mile I run to a friend or family member so as I complete each one I’ll have them in mind... as well as the thought of a chilled prosecco!

What’s your biggest marathon fear?

The weather being too hot, as I've been training in good old Scottish winter!

Elia Martinez, Colleague Comms, M&S, Paddington Office

Why did you sign up to the marathon?

I’ve worked with BCN for the past few years doing the communications, and the stories of our previous runners inspired me to want to raise money for this great cause.

What does running for Breast Cancer Now mean to you?

Everyone knows somebody who has been affected by breast cancer and it could happen to anyone. I hope I can play a small part in helping BCN in its aim to ensure everyone diagnosed not only lives, but lives well.

Are you a seasoned sprinter or a nervous novice?

I’d say somewhere in between. I’ve done a few half marathons before, but not for some time. Running a marathon is a whole different game though, so I’d say that makes me a pretty nervous novice!

What will keep you motivated in the hardest of miles?

My friends and family – they’re going to be strategically dotted around the course at the points I know will be tough. There’s nothing like a crowd cheering you on and knowing you’re contributing towards a fantastic charity to keep you going.

What’s your biggest marathon fear?

A hot day. Last year was brutal (and I was only supporting!) and I don’t want to be slowly cooked as the last few miles approach.

If you've been inspired by these stories, why not get involved in some fundraising yourself? It doesn't have to be running a marathon; we have plenty of opportunities to help out.
